Organization Introduction and Background Information

Port Health Organization, Visakhapatnam, came to existence in the year 1946. It is a statutory body under the Directorate General of Health Services, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, and is responsible for implementation of IHR 2005 and provision of other Public Health services at Visakhapatnam seaport. Visakhapatnam Port is one of the leading major ports of India. The Port is located on the east coast of India in the state of Andhra Pradesh. The Port has three harbours viz., outer harbour, inner harbour and the fishing harbour. The outer harbour has 6 berths and the inner harbour has 18 berths. The port was notified as a major port in 1964 under the Major Port Trusts Act, 1963. Under the Act, the Visakhapatnam Port Trust (VPT) is in charge of running the port.

Functions (Routine and Emergency Duties)

Routine Activities
  • Health and Sanitary Inspection of Ships.
  • Inspection of provisions and water on board.
  • Inspection of medicine chest.
  • Inspection to issue Ship sanitation exemption Certificate.
  • Grant of Radio/Free Pratique.
  • Inspection of ships from Yellow Fever Endemic Areas.
  • Yellow fever vaccination.
  • Visit of Kakinada anchorage for inspection of ships to issue SSCEC.
  • Health clearance to outgoing ships.
  • Clearance of Death on board due to Non-Infectious diseases.
  • Environmental sanitation, anti-mosquito and anti-rodent work of the port area.
  • Visiting satellite port (Gangavaram) for inspection of ships and SSCEC Renewal.
During PHEIC
  • Activation of PHECP as per guidelines given for PHEICs in general and specifically for any PHEIC.
  • Coordination with other stakeholders, National /State/ local agencies.
  • Training of stakeholders.
  • Procurement, training and Deployment of additional manpower.
  • Procurement of material and logistics required.
  • Dissemination of information through established channels of communication as per the PHECP.

Given every Tuesday and Thursday except on Govt. of India holidays. Prior booking done personally or over telephone.
Vaccination charges – as stipulated by Govt. of India – presently, Rs 300/- per dose.
